DALTON, GA. – The Apprentice School wrestling team finished its action in the 2013 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals on Saturday and finished eighth place in the 20-team event.
They opened action in the quarterfinals against Lindenwood University-St. Charles (IL) and lost 49-3 to the team that eventually won the championship. The Builders scored their lone victory at heavyweight where Ian Jones recorded a 4-0 decision for the three team points.
They dropped into the fifth-through-eighth place bracket and faced perennial powerhouse Grand Valley State University and lost 36-18 to the Lakers. Freshman Jacob Michael won at 125 pounds (12-7) to put the Builders up 3-0 before the Lakers ripped off the next five bouts with wins by fall in three of those to take a 24-3 lead after 165 pounds. Zane Brumbaugh recorded a win by fall in 1:39 at 174 pounds and Josh Rodriguez responded with a 9-2 win at 184 to cut the deficit to 24-12. Grand Valley took wins by fall at 197 and forfeit at 235 before Jones won by a forfeit at 285 for the 36-18 final.
In the seventh-place match, the Builders faced the Belleville branch of Lindenwood University and lost 35-21. The Builders jumped out to an 18-11 lead after wins by fall from Ty Ford (125/6:02), Dwayne Roes (141/1:39) and Phillip Porto (157/2:40), before Lindenwood won the next five bouts with four coming with bonus points to lead 35-18. Jones closed out a 5-0 weekend for him by winning a 4-1 decision at heavyweight.
Apprentice School will now host the Builder Invitational on Saturday at Woodside High School starting at 9 am.
