NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Apprentice School wrestling team had four individual champions and took first place in the 2013 Builder Invitational on Saturday at Woodside High School.

With 97 points, the Builders out-distanced Marion Military Institute (85), University of Scranton (44.5), St. Andrews University (40) and Ferrum College (37.5) to round out the top five of 10 participating schools.

Winning the Champion of Champions, presented to the best weight class winner by the weight class winners, was sophomore Ian Jones.  The Painesville, OH., native was 3-0 with two wins by fall to raise his record on the year to 31-3.  He opened with a fall in 2:48 over James Perini of Ferrum and then won in 4:08 over Eric Calimanto of Scranton.  In the finals, he decisioned second-seeded Denny Vaughan of St. Andrews 5-3.

Freshman Shane Smith was 3-0 at 133 pounds to win that bracket.  Smith, a native of Front Royal, VA, won a pair of matches by fall in 3:15 over Josh Tegard of St. Andrews and 3:32 over Cameron Banks of Apprentice School.  Those wins sandwiched a 19-7 major decision over Hunter Niemiec of Marion Military Institute to win the round robin bracket.

Sophomore Dwayne Roes won the 141 pound bracket also going 3-0.  The Staunton, VA native started with an 8-6 decision over Travis Herald of Bridgewater College before recording wins by fall over Louis Luu of Penn State Beaver (1:16) and Cruz Garcia of Apprentice School (4:03) to win that round robin bracket.

Freshman Josh Rodriguez won the 184 pound bracket with a 3-0 record on the day.  A native of Virginia Beach, VA, he opened with a 9-6 win over Hanz Vitzhum of William & Mary and then defeated Denzel Leggett of St. Andrews 13-11 in sudden victory.  The finals he avenged a loss from last weekend at the NCWA National Duals to Terrence Smith of Marion Military Institute with a 12-10 decision.

Three Builders took second place as senior Ty Ford went 2-1 at 125 pounds and Garcia went 2-1 at 141 to finish second and freshman Phillip Porto was 3-1 at 157 pounds to take second.

Apprentice School is now off until February 9 when they host St. Andrews University for Senior Day at 2 pm at Apprentice Gym.
