On April 28, Apprentice School Head Wrestling Coach Bruce Shumaker was honored in his hometown by being inducted into the Armstrong County (PA) Sports Hall of Fame.

He was one of 11 inductees that represented seven different sports and were recognized for making noteworthy achievements throughout the years of Armstrong County sports.

Shumaker just finished his sixth sixth season at the helm of the wrestling team and has a dual match record of 89-51 with the Builders.  In his six seasons, 22 Builders have earned National Collegiate Wrestling Association All-American honors and the team has finished in the top 10 at nationals in five of those years.  The 2008-2009 season ended with the Builders capturing their first NCWA National Championship.

This marks the second Hall of Fame honor for Shumaker who was inducted into the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004.

High School/College

• He  is a graduate of Redbank Valley High School and Edinboro State College.
• At Redbank Valley, Shumaker was a 4-year letterman in golf, a 2-year letterman in football and a 2-year letterman in wrestling.
• As a senior, he was the District IX runner up at 127 pounds.
• He walked on at Edinboro and was voted a tri-captain both his junior and senior year.

High School Coaching

• He coached at Denbigh High School (6 yrs), Natural Bridge High School (6 yrs), Mathews High School (9 yrs) and Lafayette High School (8 yrs).
• While at Mathews, his teams won the Virginia Group A Championship in 1989-90 and 1990-91.
• Bruce was a 5-time District Coach of the year and Virginia State Coach of the year in 1992 and 2005.
• His high school coaching record was 386-138.
