Rodriguez Named USCAA Wrestler Of The Week

Apprentice School sophomore Josh Rodriguez was named on Tuesday as the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 19.

Rodriguez, an electrician apprentice from Virginia Beach, VA, won the 197-pound bracket and was named the Outstanding Wrestler on Saturday at the Builder Invitational going 3-0 with two wins by decision and one by fall.  On the year, Rodriguez is 14-8 with five wins by fall.

He opened the tournament with a 4-3 decision over Greg Humphrey of East Carolina in the quarterfinals.  In his next match he avenged a loss the previous week in the Virginia Duals by winning over top-seeded Darreus McCrea of Ferrum by fall with one second left in the seven-minute match.   To win the event he defeated third-seeded Chris Silakoski of Scranton by a 10-5 decision.

The Builders are next in action on Friday in Dalton, Georgia as they compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Collegiate Cup Dual Championships.  Apprentice School enters as the third-seed in the 26-team event and will face Tennessee Temple and Stony Brook (NY) on Friday in pool play.
