MATCH SCORES: U.S. Navy Prep 27, Apprentice School 21; Rowan College at Gloucester County (NJ) 27, Apprentice School 11; Apprentice School 49, Towson 9

IN BRIEF: The wrestling team closed out the 2014 portion of its schedule on Friday night as they went 1-2 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retriever Duals.

AGAINST NAVY PREP

  • The Builders got on the board early as with a forfeit win from Jacob Michael at 125 and an 8-2 decision win by Thomas Payne at 133, the Builders held an early 9-0 lead.
  • That spurred on the Midshipmen as they won the next five bouts to lead 19-9 after 174 pounds.
  • Each team won two of the last four bouts, with forfeit wins for Phillip Porto (184) and Ian Jones (285) as the Builders lost 27-21.

AGAINST ROWAN COLLEGE AT GLOUCESTER COUNTY

  • The Builders fell behind early as Payne scored an 8-1 decision at 133 for the lone Builder win in the first seven bouts as they trailed 24-3 after 174 pounds.
  • Porto scored a 20-5 tech fall win at 184 pounds and Josh Rodriguez followed with a 7-3 win at 197, but that was all as the Builders fell 27-11.

AGAINST TOWSON

  • The Builders only lost two bouts in this dual match as they tamed the Tigers 49-9.  Payne finished a 3-0 night to win Outstanding Wrestler at 133 pounds honor with a win by fall in 54 seconds.
  • Porto, seeing his first action of the year, also went 3-0 on the night with a win by fall at 235 pounds in 1:01.

BEHIND THE BOUTS

  • They awarded Outstanding Wrestler awards at each weight class and Thomas Payne won at 1333 pounds going 3-0 on the night.
  • The loss to Navy Prep was the first dual loss of the year for the Builders who had won their first ten dual matches this season.
