IN BRIEF: The Apprentice School wrestling team qualified a minimum of eight wrestlers on Saturday for the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Nationals as they finished third in the Mid-Atlantic Conference meet held at Liberty University.
ON THE MAT
- The wrestling team had three wrestlers finish in second place, two take third, two in fourth and one in fifth to earn automatic qualifying spots for the NCWA Nationals March 12-14 in Allen, Texas.
- Junior Jacob Michael went 1-1 at 125 pounds advancing to the semifinals with a bye before scoring a 7-2 decision over Shane Shaffner of Middle Tennessee State University. In the finals he lost to top-seeded Tim Nordan of Liberty 12-4.
- Patrik Foxworth also took second in his 165-pound weight class going 3-1 on the day. He opened with a 24-9 technical fall victory over Austin Kirtlan of Liberty. His next two bouts were 4-3 decisions over Everett Colbert of MTSU and David Abbadusky of Liberty to make the final. In the final he fell to top-seeded Chase Boontjer of Liberty 6-4.
- Josh Rodriguez finished second at 197 pounds going 2-1 on the day. He also opened with a technical fall win over Michael Belliveau of VMI 23-6. In the semis he won by decision over Tyler McClendon of MTSU 7-2 before falling to Stefan Haas of James Madison 6-5 in the final.
- Senior Ian Jones took third at heavyweight as he was 3-1 on the day. He opened with a win by fall in 5:22 over Austin Wells of MTSU before falling 4-3 to second-seeded Josh Pelletier of Liberty in the semifinals. His first consolation match was a win by fall in 48 seconds over Ashton Williams of Longwood and then scored a 3-1 win in sudden victory over top-seeded Rashied Rayford of MTSU.
- Tyrell Watkins also took third in his bracket at 149 pounds going 4-1 on the day. His first match was a win by fall over Andriy Onufrienko of VMI in 6:47 and he made the semifinals with a 10-3 decision over Nick Patton of MTSU. He lost to top-seeded Peter Tatanish of Liberty 7-1 in the semifinals before scoring a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks to take third.
- Coming in fourth was Kyle Lowry (4-2) at 157 and Chris Kennedy (4-2) at 174 while Philip Porto (3-2) took fifth at 174 to finish out the automatic qualifiers. Some more wrestlers may qualify with wildcard spots that will not be determined until the week of nationals.
TEAM STANDINGS
The Builders with 117.5 points finished third behind host Liberty (215) and Middle Tennessee State (154). East Carolina rounded out the top four with 100 points.

The wrestling team will close out its season on March 12-14 at the NCWA Nationals in Allen, Texas.
