Newcomers Shine As Four Builders Capture Titles At The Virginia Beach Nationals Over The Weekend

Four Builder wrestlers won belts at the first competition of the 2018-19 season, also lifting Apprentice to a team title.  Penn State Wrestling Club placed 2nd, followed by first-year NCWA program Blue Lights College.

Colton Messick won the first belt, winning the 125 lb weight class.  After giving up the first takedown to Hunter Smith of East Carolina, Messick weathered early storm to find a fall in the 2nd period.  Also claiming hardware at 125 was Erin Aragon, who's debut made history as the first female to don a Builder singlet.  Erin finished in third after falling to Smith in the round-robin bracket.

At 133 lbs, sophomore Kolin Johnson and freshman Matthew Farrar placed 2nd and 3rd respectively, both falling to champion Dalton Henderson of VMI.  After his first round loss to Henderson, Farrar bounced back with a 12-2 major decision and a 20-11 major decision to claim bronze at his first collegiate competition.  Johnson recorded two first period pins to advance to the finals.

At 141 lbs, freshman Trey Templeton fell to #2 ranked Wesley Hollingsworth of ECU in his first college bout, but reeled off a pair of gritty wins to also claim bronze at his first competition as a Builder.

Tyler Johnson won the second title for the Builders at 149 lbs.  After sitting out his freshman season due to injury, "Robin" was eager to make a statement, dominating all three of his bouts by tech-fall, fall and 15-2 major decision.

Like Templeton, freshman William Heath was faced with a tough draw in his first college bout, losing #1 Nationally ranked Dan Ritz of Penn State Wrestling Club.  Heath came back to win bronze in his freshman debut with a pair of pins in the wrestle-backs.

#1 Chad Simmons knocked down a pair of pins at 165 lbs to claim his first red belt at Virginia Beach.

Walk-on Jacob Heyde made his debut at 174 lbs winning his first ever wrestling match by way of 19-4 tech-fall.  The jiu-jitsu blue belt would drop his next two bouts to place top-six at his first tournament despite never having wrestled prior to this season.

At 184 lbs, Wes Sorey claimed the fourth and final title for Apprentice winning three straight, including a pin in his first bout.

Another walk-on, AJ White, also placed in his first collegiate competition wrestling up to 235 lbs despite weighing in under 200 lbs.  White recorded a pin over Penn State Club to advance to the semi-finals before falling to eventual champion Greg Humphrey of Old Timer.  After a loss in the consolation semis, White found a cradle for a come-from-behind pin to place 5th

At 285 lbs, Stephen Francisco Sr. and Zach Sintobin placed 2nd and 5th respectively.  Frankie won two close decisions before falling in the championship bout while Sintobin would drop his first two before recording a 12-1 win over 2018 Builder Invitational champion Dia Gray in his final bout.

Apprentice will take a step up in competition next weekend at the Fall Brawl at Ursinus College.  Apprentice has yet to crown a single champion at the Fall Brawl since first attending over 10 years ago.  The leaders of the 2018-19 squad will look to make history this weekend and change that statistic.
