Simmons Captures First Fall Brawl Title

Senior Chad Simmons won the 165 lb weight class at the Ursinus Fall Brawl, becoming the first Builder to win the event in the 10+ years Apprentice has attended.

Chad recorded a pin, a 17-0 tech fall, and an 11-0 major decision to advance to the semi-finals.  Trailing early against Zach Goranson of Ursinus, Chad tied the score 4-4 Going into the final period. With under 10 seconds remaining, Chad found a tilt with back points to punch his ticket to the finals.  In the championship match, he held on to a hard fought 2-0 decision over Jarrett DiGiantomasso of Ursinus for the title.

Two other Builders advanced to the semifinals.  Both Colton Messick and Wes Sorey placed 4th after falling in the semis. In the consolation semis, Sorey avenged his conference loss to All-American Josh McIllhenny of Liberty last season.

Kolin Johnson went 3-2 on the day, falling in the consolation semis at 133 lbs.

Heavyweight Freshman Peter Cortapasso fell to #1 NCWA hwt Dominic Johnson in his first college bout. Passo bounced back with two first period pins before losing in his 4th bout.

NEXT UP: Apprentice will travel to the Salem Civic Center to compete at the Star City Tournament, hosted by Ferrum College.
