Apprentice School Wrestling Announces All Decade Team

 

Wrestler of the Decade (1)

Marcus Chevres

Marcus Chevres (2008-2012) - Chevres finished his career as the second ever four-time All-American for the Builders.  The Norfolk native set the all-time school wins record at the time with 134. In all four seasons "Chevy" never lost more than one bout at the National Championships, finishing 3rd his final two seasons and as the runner-up his first two seasons.  He was also named the Apprentice School Co-Athlete of the Year with Men's Basketball Senior Isaiah Harrison.

 

All Decade Team Captain (1)

Colton Messick

Colton Messick (2016-2020) - Ignoring his individual athletic achievements, Colton is arguably the greatest leader the Builders have ever seen. Colton was instrumental in cultivating a family-like mentality on the squad, as well as holding his teammates to a higher standard.  Leading by example with hard work, he guided the team to a pair of second place finishes at the National Championships.

 

 

 

All Decade Team

125-Colton Messick (2016-2020) - The three-time All-American's career was highlighted with a National Title in 2018.  He was also a two-time MAC Champion, and a two-time USCAA Champion.  His 128 career wins are the third most in school history.

133-Marcus Chevres (2008-2012) - Aside from his four All-American honors, Chevres was also a four-time Mid-Atlantic Conference champion.  He was the school's first three-time honoree on the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association All-State Wrestling team, and was a member of the 2008-2009 team that won the school's first and only NCWA National Championship.

 

Tywana Holley 141-Tywana Holley (2008-2010) - Ty capped off his career with a National Title at 141 lbs, after finishing 4th as a junior.  His championship would be the last for the Builders before a drought of eight years. Ty recorded an impressive 56 wins in his two seasons as a Builder.  He was also a member of the 2009 National Championship team.

 

 

 

 

 

Kyle Spruill 149-Kyle Spruill (2009-2013) - 'Biggie' finished his Builder career as an All-American, placing 5th in arguably the toughest era of the NCWA.  His 99 career wins still rank 9th most in school history.  He was also selected for the VaSID All-State team in 2013.

 

 

 

 

 

Chad Simmons 157-Chad Simmons (2015-2019) - Chad finished his final two seasons as the National runner-up at 157 lbs, after finishing in 5th at 165 as a sophomore.  He still remains the only Builder to capture a title at the Ursinus Fall Brawl.  His 127 career wins rank 4th all-time. He was also a two-time USCAA Champion and a MAC Champion.  VaSID 2nd team All-State in 2017, and 2019. VaSID 1st team All-State in 2018.

 

 

 

Will Harcum 165-Will Harcum (2008-2010) - Harcum was an All-American both years as a Builder at 165 lbs.  Set the single-season pin record at the time with 28 in 2010.  45 wins as a senior still tied for 3rd all-time.  Set the school record by winning first 12 bouts of the 2009-2010 season.  Two-time MAC Champion and was a member of the 2009 National Championship team.  VaSID 2nd team All-State in 2009.

 

 

 

 

  

Dan Henson 174-Dan Henson (2013-2019) - Without a single Builder All-American from 2010-2019, Henson came the closest to standing on the podium.  Entering the 2018 National Tournament as the 21st seed, 'Hendo' advanced to the quarter-finals with back to back upsets over the 12th and 5th seeds.  He would ultimately drop a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in the blood-round to become an All-American.  Finished his career in 2019 as a four-time National qualifier.

 

 

 

 

 

Willy Crawford 184-Willie Crawford (2010-2012) - Crawford earned All-American honors as a freshman, placing 4th in 2011.  That season he claimed the MAC title by pinning the 2010 National runner-up in the first period.  Also won the inaugural USCAA Championship at 184. 37 wins as a freshman was 8th most season wins in school history at the time.  2011 Rookie of the Year and was undefeated for nearly a three-month stretch during the season.  VaSID 2nd team All-State in 2011.

 

 

 

Ross Graham 197-Ross Graham (2018-2019) - Two-time NCWA National Finalist, winning the title as a freshman in 2018.  Two-time MAC Champion, pinning a three-time National Champion in the finals his sophomore season.  Two-time USCAA Champion.  VaSID 2nd team All-State in 2018.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Russ Pierce 235-Russ Pierce (2019-) - Russ put together a stellar freshman campaign, placing 5th at the NCWA National Championships.  He became the first All-American in fourteen years for the Builders at 235 lbs.  Fifteen of his nineteen wins that season were pins and he was not pinned at all.  Advanced to the blood-round at Nationals as a sophomore needing one more win to All-American before withdrawing from the tournament.  Still an active Apprentice, Russ is one of the rare two-sport athletes in the program where he is a standout on the football team as well. 

 

 

 

Ian Jones 285-Ian Jones (2011-2015) - Affectionately known as 'Tank', Jones was one of the rare four-time All-Americans for Apprentice, becoming only the third to do so in school history.  Was the 2015 Apprentice School 'Athlete of the Year', as well as the Peninsula Sports Club Athlete of the Year.  Still holds the school record with 156 career wins.  2013 MAC Champion, four-time USCAA Champion. 1st Team VaSID All-state team three times (2012,2013,2014), 2nd team All-State one time (2015).

 

 

 

 

All Decade 2nd Team (Various Weight Classes)

Ricky Anderson 1) Ricky Anderson (2008-2012) - A member of the 2009 National Championship team.  Known for his brutality and aggressive style, Ricky is by far the most prolific pinner in Apprentice history.  He earned All-American honors in 2011, placing 6th at 157 lbs.  His unprecedented 43 pins that season eclipsed the previous record of 28.  His 86 career pins and 51 single season wins still hold school records as well, in fact he holds the top spot in half of the school records and is in the top ten of all school records.  2011 USCAA Champion. 2010 MAC Champion. 1st Team VaSID All-State Team 2011.

 

 

Michael Boyd 2) Ty Boyd (2015-2019) - Ty became the second Builder in history to All-American in three different weight classes, placing 7th at 125 as a freshman, 5th at 133 as a sophomore, and 6th at 149 as a junior.  Two-time MAC Champion, USCAA Champion.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Quentin Bowling 3) Quentin Bowling (2008-2011) - A member of the 2009 National Championship team, Bowling turned a lackluster sophomore season into a bit of a Cinderella story earning All-American honors in 2010.  After dropping his opening match, 'Q-Bowl' bounced back winning four straight bouts to secure a spot on the podium.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Matt Perry 4) Matthew Perry (2006-2010) - An Apprentice All-Decade team would not be complete without the inclusion of Perry.  The three-time All-American finished 7th and 8th his first two seasons at 149 lbs.  After failing to earn an automatic qualifying bid for the 2010 National Tournament, Perry was granted a wildcard berth at 157 lbs.  At the National Tournament, 'P-Dog' would upset the 5th, and 4th seeds to cap his career off with a 3rd place finish, his only loss a 3-2 decision to 3x National Champ Peter Rose in the semi-finals.  His 110 career wins still rank 6th best in school history.

 

 

 

 

Shalek Colon 5) Shalek Colon (2016-) - Still an active apprentice, Colon is already a two-time All-American. After falling one win short of All-American honors as a freshman, Shalek would win five bouts in Texas to place 5th at 141 lbs his sophomore season and did not surrender a single offensive point in his final three bouts.  After an injury ended his next season, Shalek would lead the team the majority of his junior campaign.  He entered the National Tournament as the 4th seed, advancing to the semi-finals before withdrawing from the tournament.  2018 USCAA Champion.

 

 

 

Ty Ford 6) Tyare Ford (2009-2013) - Undersized and out-gunned for collegiate competition as a freshman and sophomore, Ty turned a sub-par record into a pair of All-American performances his final two seasons that saw him go 43-19 placing 6th and 8th at 125 lbs.  Two-time USCAA Champion, two-time MAC Champion. 

 

 

 

  

Steven Francisco 7) Steven Francisco (2015-2019) - After an unsuccessful bid at 235 pounds, 'Frankie' found new success as a heavyweight earning a pair of All-American finishes.  He would put together 63 wins in three abbreviated seasons.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kevin Gray 8) Kevin Gray (2009-2013) - Kevin was a contender in the 235 and heavyweight divisions in the NCWA all four years.  He fell just one win shy of All-American honors twice during the toughest era of the division.  His 44 career pins rank 7th all-time. 2013 USCAA Champion.

 

 

 

 

Kolin Johnson 9) Kolin Johnson (2017-)  Still an active apprentice, Kolin is already a three-time All-American and 2019 National Champion.  His junior season he was the pound-for-pound top wrestler in the NCWA and was heavily favored to defend his national title before withdrawing from the tournament. Two-time USCAA Champion, two-time MAC Champion.  97 career wins and 59 career pins already rank in the top-ten school records.

 

 

 

 

Tristian Mabe 10) Tristan Mabe (2016-) - An injury ridden career has plagued the still-active apprentice, but didn't stop him from earning All-American honors in 2019 when he placed 5th at 157 lbs.  In that season he defeated the returning National Champion at the National Duals.  Mabe led the team with 31 wins and 17 pins his freshman season before an injury stopped him from All-American honors.  That season he would defeat the NCAA D3 runner-up at the Waynesburg Duals.  He has 37 pins in only two full seasons.  Two-time USCAA Champion.

 

 

 

 

 

Josh Rodriguez 11) Josh Rodriguez (2012-2016) - Competing anywhere from 184 to 235 lbs, Rodriguez is considered to be one of the best Builders to not win All-American honors, falling in the blood-round at nationals twice.  His 98 career wins are currently 10th all-time. He became the first builder to win the Waynesburg Invitational in 2015 and was named USCAA wrestler of the week on multiple occasions.  Outstanding wrestler at the Builder Invitational 2014.
