Second Half Rally Dooms Builders In 20-14 Loss To Southern Virginia

SALEM, VA. – The Southern Virginia University Knights scored three touchdowns in the final 17 minutes of the game as they rallied to defeat the Apprentice School 20-14 at Salem Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Apprentice School scored first in the early stages of the second quarter as junior Paul Morgan found Al Little on a 30-yard touchdown pass as Little broke several tacklers and ran the final 10 yards untouched to put the Builders up 7-0 with 13:20 left in the half.

The Builders put their final touchdown on the board on the opening possession of the second half as Tequan Mayfield intercepted a Mitch Stevenson pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to put the Builders ahead 14-0 just 52 seconds into the second half.

Southern Virginia mounted its comeback starting with a 15-play, 87-yard drive that was capped by a Jamal Coates five-yard scoring run with 1:56 left cutting the deficit to 14-7.  The Knights blocked a punt late in the third quarter setting themselves up on the Builder 10-yard line.  On the first play of the fourth quarter, Stevenson connected with Frank Tatiano on a 10-yard scoring pass to tie the game at 14-all.

The Knights defense stepped into action and forced a fumble on the Builder 35 and Tod Workman put them ahead 20-14 on a 25-yard scoring run with 12:22 left in the game.

Apprentice School had s chance late but the Knights sacked Jonathan Whelan on a fourth down play with 69 seconds left and they ran out the clock for the win.

Morgan was 9-of-13 passing for 95 yards and a touchdown for the Builders, while Louis Norwood caught three passes for 28 yards to lead the receivers .  Izhia Roundtree topped the Builders on defense with 11 tackles and one pass breakup.

The Builders are now off until October 20 when they'll host Alfred State College in the first Newport News Shipbuilding Employees Day.  All shipyard workers, presenting their badge at admission gate, will get in free along with their families.  Kickoff with the Pioneers is scheduled for 1 pm.
