The football team starts October by heading to Alfred, N.Y. for a United States Collegiate Athletic Association matchup with the Pioneers of Alfred State. This is the first of two meetings between the schools as the rematch will take place on November 1 in Newport News.
This is the fourth meeting between the schools with Alfred State holding a 2-1 advantage, with the home team winning each encounter. Last year's game was a wild encounter with the teams combining for nearly 1,100 yards of offense as Alfred State won 55-41. The Pioneers ran for 445 yards, while the Builders threw for 342.
Apprentice School enters off a 32-16 loss to Bridgewater College. The Builders trailed 18-16 with 11:30 left in the game, but two fourth-quarter interceptions snuffed out any comeback hopes. Brandon Jordan ran for 53 yards and one touchdown while leading the team with four receptions. Trevon Johnson caught three passes for a team-high 76 yards.
Alfred State lost last week to Castleton 36-23 as senior Rasheed Williams ran for 260 yards and two touchdowns. He has 779 yards in four games and ran for 336 in last year's meeting with the Builders.
USA COLLEGE FOOTBALL AWARD
Freshman James Fields was named the USA College Football Small College Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 27. He had eight tackles, seven solo stops, and an interception as the Builders fell 32-16 to Bridgewater. Fields helped lead a Builder defense that held the Eagles to 11 yards rushing for the game. That mark is the third lowest a team has ran for against the Builders in the last 15 years.
WHITE ON SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS
Apprentice School Head Coach Paul White will be a guest this month on the Newport News Public Schools Television Sports Highlights. White, along with Apprentice School graduate and Peninsula Sports Club Board Member Joe Sabol, are part of the October show which starts on Saturday at 9 am. The show, hosted by Greg Bicouvaris, is also shown on Sunday mornings at 9 and Mondays at 7 am, 2 pm and 7 pm.
