2012-13 Top 10 Games - Builders Topple Dragons Twice

The men's basketball team makes an early appearance in the Top 10 Games of 2012-13 countdown today with a pair of nail-biting wins over Virginia University-Lynchburg.

On January 20, these teams closed out the 2013 Martin Luther King Classic with a 96-85 overtime win by the Builders.  In the overtime, the Builders scored 10 of the first 12 points to race out to an 89-81 lead on a pair of Terrence Palmer free throws with 99 seconds left.

The rematch came 19 days later at the Lynchburg City Armory and while it didn't need extra minutes to decide the winner, it came within a whisker.  In a game that saw nine ties and eight lead changes, freshman Jay Melendez drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Builders escaped Lynchburg with a 98-95 win over the Dragons.

The teams traded the lead as Lakuan McPhaul's three-point play with 1:36 left put the hosts up 93-92.  On the ensuing possession, Lance Darden was fouled shooting a 3-pointer which gave him three free throws.  He drained them all to put the Builders up 95-93 with 1:32 left.  After a pair of missed shots by each team, Dennis Gravely hit a jumper with 32 seconds left to tie the game for the ninth time at 95-all and set up Melendez for the buzzer-beater.
