YORK, PA. – Sophomore Ian Jones took third place at heavyweight to lead the Apprentice School on Saturday as the wrestlers finished 12th at the York College (PA) New Standard Invitational. Nationally-ranked Ithaca College won the event followed by The College of New Jersey.
Jones, who was seeded first in the heavyweight bracket, scored a pair of major decision victories early over Chris Ramirez of Ithaca College (14-6) and Zach Coleman of York College (13-1) before falling to eventual champion John Wilkinson of Brockport State in the semifinals. He rebounded in the third-place match to defeat Bradley Ladd of Millersville University 5-2 to put his record on the year at 14-2.
Other standout performances included freshmen heavyweights Jace Grimmett (3-2) and Kyle Cox (2-2). Fellow freshman Luke Hanson was 3-2 at 197 pounds and freshman Phillip Porto was 2-2 at 165 pounds including a second round win by fall over the fourth-seed in that bracket.
The Builders will return to dual match action next weekend with their annual visit to the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retriever Duals on December 8.
