Grimm leads Apprentice Golf in 2021 Season Opener

Newport News, VA – After a 17 month hiatus, the Apprentice Golf Team was back on the course at Sleepy Hole in Suffolk, VA, for their 2021 Fall Season Opener.  The Builders welcomed in Mid-Atlantic Christian University and Campbellsville University-Harrodsburg, as the 3 schools competed in a 2-day, 36 hole event. 

On the opening day, Apprentice was led by Junior William Graves, who finished the round with an 84 and was followed by Senior David Grimm who came in the clubhouse with a round of 87.  Junior Zach Welch concluded the day at 89, while Freshman Ethan Flanders turned in a 94.  The Builders concluded the first day with total team score of 354. 

On day 2 of competition, Grimm found his stroke and fired a team high 80, which was a 7 stroke improvement from day 1.  Ethan Flanders, showed improvement from his first round by finishing 5 strokes better with an 89.  Graves and Welch rounded out the day with a 92 and 96 to help Apprentice finish with a day 2 score of 357.

The Builders ended the 2 rounds with a total team score 711 and were lead overall by David Grimm, who finished the event with a combined score of 167, followed by William Graves at 176, Ethan Flanders at 183 and Zach Welch with 185.  The overall event Team Medalist was won by the Campbellsville A Team and Chance Presley from Campbellsville earned Individual Medalist. 

“We were glad to be out on the course after 17 months,” said head coach Joey Maben.  “We had a few highlights as Davey Grimm improved with an 80 today to help the team.  We look forward to visiting Campbellsville next week in Kentucky to compete in a match play event”

Apprentice will return to action on September 10th when they travel to Kentucky to face Campbellsville University-Harrodsburg and then return home for a match-up with Virginia Wesleyan University on September 15th and 16th.
