NEWPORT NEWS - Over the summer, The Apprentice School Department of Athletics will take time to spotlight each of our six inductees into the 2023 class of the Apprentice School Athletics Hall of Fame. Today, we highlight former wrestling coach Bruce Shumaker.

Shumaker served as head coach of the Builder wrestling program from 2008-17, winning the NCWA National Championship in 2009. During his time at Apprentice, he produced 36 NCWA All-Americans, 27 NCWA Conference Champions, 32 NCWA All-Academic Members and 20 USCAA Champions.

He also led 16 wrestlers to be named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State Team, six of which were first team members. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame will not be anything new for Shumaker as he was inducted into the NCWA Hall of Fame in 2017.
