Builders Stumble In 34-21 Loss To Pride

IN BRIEF: Warren Scott ran for 145 yards and scored two touchdowns as visiting Greensboro College defeated The Apprentice School 34-21 in the home opener for the Builders on Saturday.

The Pride got on the board first with a seven-yard pass from Ryan Thorndset to Tripp Honeycutt to end a 91-yard, 12-play drive and take a 7-0 lead with 7:18 left in the first.  Apprentice School responded early in the second quarter taking advantage of a turnover as Leonard Leak bulled his way in from the three to tie the game 7-all with 14:35 left in the half. 

Greensboro put two scores up in the final 10 minutes of the first half as Scott ran in from the five and Cortez Vernon scored on a one-yard run as Greensboro held a 21-7 lead at the half.

Each team scored twice in the second half as the Builders used the tandem of Jonathan Whelan to Chase Donahue on a pair of 19-yard scoring passes.  The first one came on a fourth-and-11 and the final one ended three straight completions to Donahue to cover the 58 yards in the scoring drive. 

The Pride finished the scoring as Scott snaked his way in on a nine-yard run with 35 seconds left for the 34-21 final.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • Leak was the leading rusher for the Builders with 23 carries for 85 yards.
  • Whelan was 13-of-30 for 145 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Donahue with five catches for a game-high 82 yards.
  • Blake Penix proved to be a key component early in the day as his punts kept pinning the Pride deep in their own end.  He had four punts go inside the 20 with three of those going inside the seven as he averaged nearly 37 yards per punt.
  • Marlon Lane set a career high in tackles as he topped the Builders with 11 on the day.

BUILDER BITS

  • With his eight tackles, Brock Bullock moved into sixth place on the career tackles list with 205.
  • The four punts inside the 20 yardline for Penix is a single-game record.

NEXT UP

Apprentice School travels to Alfred, NY on September 28 to take on the Pioneers of Alfred State.  This is the first U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup of the year for the Builders.  Alfred State (0-3) lost to Husson (ME) 13-0 on Saturday.
