Bullock Sets Tackle Record As Builders Fall To Knights

IN BRIEF: Sophomore quarterback Andy Jones threw for 215 yards, three touchdowns and ran for a score as homestanding Southern Virginia University defeated The Apprentice School 34-7 in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Jones opened the scoring for the Knights with an 11-yard run to put the hosts up 7-0 with 7:11 left in the first quarter.  SVU pushed the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter as Nate Caldwell scored on an 11-yard run with 13:56 left.

The passing lanes opened up for Jones as he threw the next three touchdowns for the Knights.  A pair of scores to Dee Sanford for eight and 59-yards sandwiched a 28-yard pass to Chris Harper.  The 59-yarder to Sanford put the hosts up 34-0 with 5:40 left in the third quarter.

Apprentice School got in the scoring column as TaMichael Fedd scored on a two-yard run with 2:52 left.  Fedd started the drive with three nifty runs before scoring the touchdown.  Junior quarterback Jonathan Whelan was 3-for-4 on the drive for 56 yards including a big 32-yard completion to Kyle Elmore on a third down and seven from the Builder 42.

Whelan was 18-for-36 for 164 yards in the air with three interceptions.  Leonard Leak was the leading rusher for the Builders with 11 carries for 37 yards.  Tod Workman topped SVU on the ground with 13 carries for 101 yards as the Knights ran for 230 yards and threw for 215 more.

BUILDER BITS

Senior Brock Bullock broke the school record for tackles in a game with 24.  The linebacker from Fredericksburg, Va. had 11 solo tackles and 13 assisted to go along with a pass breakup.  He had 14 in the first half and broke the record on a tackle for a two-yard loss with 11:30 left in the game.   

The previous record was 21 by Steve Sobczak in 1990 against Salisbury University.  Bullock, who has 90 tackles in six games, has had four games of at least 14 tackles this season.

Freshman Kyle Elmore caught a season-high eight passes for 92 yards to lead the receivers.  His previous high was four in the season opener against Muhlenberg College.
