IN BRIEF: Jared Watts ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns as visiting Southern Virginia University defeated The Apprentice School 38-6 in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup on Saturday at Apprentice Field.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Knights capped off a 15-play, 69-yard scoring drive early in the second quarter as Watts scored on a four-yard run to lead 7-0 with 12:50 left.  Their defense stepped into the next touchdown as on the ensuing play for the Builders, Robert Crews stripped the ball from Apprentice quarterback Terrence Sudberry and returned it 25 yards to lead 14-0 just 20 seconds later.

The Knights closed the half on a 39-yard field goal from Davis Cragun to take a 17-0 lead into the locker room.

Watts scored on the first possession of the third quarter for Southern Virginia as he rambled in on an 11-yard run to lead 24-0 with 13:07 left.  He covered all but four yards of a 50-yard scoring drive for SVU on three runs.   The special teams unit scored the last two touchdowns for SVU as Grant Darrington blocked a punt and recovered in the end zone to push the advantage to 31-0 with 6:44 left in the third.  Early in the fourth, Dee Sanford returned a punt 57 yards to give Southern Virginia a 38-0 lead with 14:03 left in the game.

Apprentice School got on the board in the final two minutes as they went on a 39-yard scoring drive as Jonathan Whelan connected with Derek Banks on a 16-yard scoring pass with 1:54 left for the 38-6 final.

BUILDER BITS

  • Senior Brock Bullock set the single-season tackle record as he had a game-high 16 tackles.  The Fredericksburg, Va. native now has 125 tackles on the year and is now five tackles from tying the career record of 295 by Steve Sobczak from 1989-91.
  • Senior Marlon Lane tied his career-high with three pass breakups.  That marked the third time he has had three pass breakups in a game as he did that against Southern Virginia University two weeks earlier and LaGrange College in 2010.
  • Freshman Joseph Hodge ran for a team-best 55 yards to pace the running game for the Builders.
  • Senior Izhia Roundtree had nine tackles, including three for a loss and a sack.
