The Apprentice School returns to action Saturday as the team heads to Alfred, NY for a 12 p.m. game against Alfred State. Both teams will be looking for their first win of the season.
The Pioneers are coming off a bye week, with their last game a 59-7 loss at Brockport State. Alfred State has allowed 48 points per game while scoing only 9.8 points per game. Quarterback Ben Wilkerson leads the offense, having completed 46-of-80 passes for 551 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wilkerson's favorite target is wide receiver Josh Ashley, who has 250 yards on 21 receptions. Joshua Hinds leads the rushing attack with 115 yards on 73 attempts. For the defense, linebacker John Garbowski leads the team with 44 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and recoveries, and an interception. Right behind Garbowski is linebacker Kenneth Nelson with 41 tackles.
The Builders are coming off of a 35-2 loss at Louisburg College. The Builders have allowed 36.8 points per game while scoring 10.2 points per game. Dustin Hiner paces the offense with 503 yards rushing and a pair of scores. Brenden O'Neil has thrown for 170 yards and rushed for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On defense, Travis Harris leads the team with 34 tackles. M. Scott is second with 23 tackles. The freshman outside machinist from Campobello, SC blocked an extra point and returned it 98 yards for the lone score against Louisburg.
Alfred State leads the series 3-2, with the home team always getting the win. The programs split a pair of games last season: the Pioneers won 44-30 last October 4, while the Builders won 39-34 on November 1. Both teams were tied 20-20 at halftime in the latest meeting, but the Apprentice School used a 13-point fourth quarter to seal the victory.
