Builders' consistent play earns match win over Virginia Wesleyan

Newport News, VA – After competing in a match play event last week, the Apprentice Golf Team returned to traditional stroke play as they hosted neighboring Virginia Wesleyan University, in a two day event.  The match between the Builders and Marlins teed-off on Wednesday morning at Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk and concluded on Thursday afternoon.  While VWU's John Wampler earned the individual medalist honor for the match, Apprentice put together a strong team performance, coming away with the win by a stroke score of 691-730.

On the first day of the event, David Grimm led the way for the Builders, shooting an 83, which was his second best round of the season.  Ethan Flanders and Williams Graves both also shot in the 80's, with Flanders finishing at 87 and Graves, one shot back, at 88.  Zach Welch rounded out the day one scores for Apprentice by carding a 91.

Day two saw all four Builders play consistent golf, with Ethan Flanders recording his best round of the season with an 81, followed by David Grimm, who finished with a score of 85.  Zach Welch saw a 4-stroke improvement from day one, finishing at 87, while William Graves shot an 89.  Overall, Apprentice finished the event with a total team score of 691, defeating the Marlins by 39 strokes.  This score was also a 20 stroke improvement for the Builders, compared to when they last competed at Sleepy Hole back on August 30th and 31st.

Apprentice will have next week off but will return to action on Monday September 27th, when they host Conference Carolinas member Chowan University.  The match will once again take place at the Sleepy Hole Golf Course.
