NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Freshman Tamara Davis scored 14 points, while fellow freshman Latorya Grimes added 10 as the Apprentice School defeated Chowan University 55-41 on Thursday night.
In the first half the Hawks hung around trailing 14-12 on a pair of Brittany Nicholson free throws with 11:41 remaining before the Lady Builders broke it open. A 13-2 run gave the Apprentice School (8-9) a 27-16 advantage with 5:49 left on a layup from Davis. Chowan made a small push from there and cut the lead to 29-22 on a Patricia Price free throw with 1:38 left.
Apprentice School broke the game open in the second half using an 11-3 run over a 5:08 span to take a 45-31 lead on a Rahshann Lewter layup with 8:18 left. The lead grew to as much as 15 points on a pair of LaTorya Grimes free throws with six minutes left for a 49-34 advantage.
The Lady Builders shot 50% from the floor (20-of-40) while holding the Hawks to a 15-of-64 performance from the floor (23.4%). Chowan (5-14) out rebounded the Lady Builders 43-35, while the win was the second for the Apprentice School in its last nine games against the Hawks.
Apprentice School will turn around on Monday night and host NAIA Division I Allen University in a 6 pm tipoff.
