MURFREESBORO, NC - Four Najah Harris free throws in the final 20 seconds gave the homestanding Chowan Hawks a 58-55 victory over the Apprentice School Lady Builders on Wednesday night to snap an eight-game Apprentice School winning streak.
In a first half that saw the teams trade the lead 11 times, a Tameka Christopher 3-pointer put Chowan (10-12) ahead 19-18 with 2:09 remaining. Apprentice School's Denise Hamilton drained a jumper 11 seconds later putting the Lady Builders up 20-19. With 42 seconds left Chowan's Ransheda Jennings put the hosts up 21-20 with a short jumper. The Lady Builders answered with a Upenda Morton 3-pointer for a 23-21 advantage.
Chowan took the lead for good in the second half as Brittany Nicholson hit a 3-pointer at the 16:55 mark for a 24-23 advantage. The Hawks pushed the lead to seven points twice, but saw the Lady Builders cut it down to 54-53 on a Tamara Davis jumper with 32 seconds left. From there, Harris hit four free throws and Davis added two for the Lady Builders for the final margin.
Rahshann Lewter paced the Lady Builders with 20 points and four steals, while Davis added 15 and six rebounds. Nicholson topped Chowan in scoring with 11 points, while AJ O'Banion added 10.
Next up for the Apprentice School will be a Valentines Day matchup with Southern Virginia University at home starting at 2 pm.
