Pringle's Free Throw With Four Seconds Left Lifts Lady Builders Over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 75-74

HAMPTON, VA. - Freshman Jasmine Pringle hit one of two free throws with four seconds left as the Apprentice School scored a 75-74 victory over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Sunday at Hampton University's Holland Hall.

The Lady Builders opened the game on a 12-2 run in the first 4:04 as a Jasmine Gerald 3-pointer put them ahead with 15:56 left.  St. Joseph's methodically worked their way back into the contest cutting the deficit to two points on two occasions, the last being on a Teresa Mangan jumper with 7:05 left for a 27-25 score.

Apprentice School pushed the lead back to double figures on a Shameka Warren 3-point play with 2:44 left to lead 42-32.  The Lady Bears closed the half cutting the deficit to 45-40 on a pair of Janine Doran free throws with 25 seconds left.

In the second half the Lady Builders pushed the lead back to double figures on a Candice Kelley 3-pointer with 14:32 left to lead 56-46.  St. Joseph's responded with a 12-1 run to take its first lead of the game at 58-57 on a Caitlyn Kakavas 3-pointer with 10:55 left. 

The game was tight for the next few minutes as the Lady Bears took a pair of leads with the last being on an Ashley McQuillan 3-pointer with 5:38 left to lead 66-64.  Apprentice School responded there with an 8-0 run over the next 3:26 to take a 72-66 lead on a pair of Pringle free throws with 2:12 left.

McQuillan answered with six straight points - three on the foul line and a 3-pointer to bring St. Joseph's to within one at 73-72 with 29 seconds left.  After a Candice Kelley free throw pushed the lead to 74-72 with 17 seconds left, St. Joseph's brought the ball in bounds and called a timeout with 15 seconds left.  Allison Kavanaugh found Joanna Marciniec for a layup with 11 seconds left to tie the game again at 74-all.

Apprentice School brought the ball in bounds where Pringle was fouled with four seconds left.  She hit the first and missed the second free throw, but St. Joseph's wasn't able to get a shot off before the buzzer.

LaTorya Grimes paced the Lady Builders with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Warren also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Gerald added 14 points off the bench and Pringle scored 11 for the Lady Builders who hit 23-of-47 from the floor (48.9%) and 25-of-36 from the foul line (69.4%).  McQuillan was the leading scorer in the game for St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (13-12) with 27 points.

Apprentice School will now play host to Bluefield College in a 6 pm tip on Friday night at Holland Hall.
