ON THE COURT: Senior Courtney Collins scored 19 points and freshman Kelsey Daniels added 10 as the Apprentice School used a 17-1 run over a nearly 11 minute span of both halves to take a 59-37 win over visiting Washington Adventist University on Saturday night.

The Lady Builders jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on an April McCoy layup with 15:36 left and held the Shock scoreless for almost the first six minutes before a Rashawnda Carter layup put them on the board at 14:02 mark.

Washington Adventist used that layup to start an 11-2 run for its last lead on a pair of Courtney Cayard free throws with 10:59 left to lead 11-9. Cayard went 1-of-2 from the line with 8:17 left to bring the Shock to 14-12 and that turned into the final points of the first half as the Lady Builders scored the next 11 to lead 25-12 on a Christina Licano 3-point play with one second left in the half.

In the second half, the Lady Builders scored six of the first seven points to lead 31-13 on a Kenya Wilkerson steal and layup with 17:24 left.  The lead grew to as much as 32 points on a Collins 3-point play with 7:21 left for a 54-22 lead.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • For the second straight game, the Lady Builders held their opponent to under 12 points in the first half as Apprentice School took a 25-12 lead at the break.
  • Wilkerson had seven points, seven assists and five rebounds for the Lady Builders.
  • Collins was the leading rebounder with eight, while McCoy, Shanae Hilliard and Danita Whitaker added six apiece. The Lady Builders out-rebounded Washington Adventist 54-32.
  • The Shock were 10-of-50 from the floor (20%), and 1-10 from three-point range (10%) while 16-of-27 from the foul line (59.3%).  Re'Gene Watson topped them with 16 points and eight rebounds.
  • Apprentice School was 24-of-62 (38.7%) from the floor, 2-for-11 from 3-point range (18.2%) and 9-of-17 from the foul line (52.9%).

The Lady Builders will be right back on the home floor of the new Apprentice Gym on Monday night to face in-state rival Southern Virginia University in a 6pm tip.
