ON THE COURT

  • After the Broncos opened the scoring with a layup, Courtney White drained a 3-pointer to get the Apprentice School on the board. Fayetteville State followed with a deep ball of their own, but White answered with yet another 3-pointer. A Kelsey Daniels free throw at the 6:50 mark gave the Lady Builders an early 7-5 lead, but back-to-back baskets allowed Fayetteville to take back control 9-7 (6:18).
  • After another three from White, the Broncos went on a 7-0 run to pull ahead 16-10. Daniels and Quanisha Bruce each made a bucket to cut the lead to 16-14, but a Bronco score and free throw pushed the Fayetteville lead to 19-14. Chauntell Dunbar hit a jumper with :52 on the clock and Fayetteville got a layup to fall to round out the scoring in the opening quarter.
  • In the second quarter, the Lady Builders scored four straight as Ylexzis Traeger scored a jumper and Julissa Riddick converted both of her charity attempts to pull within 21-20. The teams continued to go back-and-forth as the Apprentice School refused to go away. After a pair of Bria Hill free throws cut the Bronco lead to 31-30, Fayetteville netted a pair of baskets to go into the locker room with a 35-30 advantage.
  • The Broncos started to pull away in the third quarter, using another 7-0 run to pull ahead 49-34 at the 4:18 mark. After the teams exchanged field goals, the Lady Builders responded with a 5-0 run, all from free-throws, to end the quarter and trim the lead to 51-41.
  • In the fourth, an early 7-0 Apprentice run, capped off by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Traeger, allowed the team to get within 57-51. Unfortunately, the Lady Builders couldn't get much closer as Fayetteville began to pull away again.
  • With 2:00 remaining in the game, Bruce made a free-throw to make it 66-55. The Broncos followed with a pair of free-throws before a Kenya Wilkerson jumper cut the Fayetteville lead back to 11 (68-57, 1:34).
  • After a Bronco field goal, Bruce went to the line to shoot two, making both shots. The Apprentice School then returned the favor and sent Fayetteville to the line and Shamaiya Battle connected on both of her attempts. Another free-throw and a layup by the visitors rounded out the scoring.
