Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Teams Recognized

NEWPORT NEWS - The Apprentice School women's basketball program had the opportunity to recognize the two teams from the program's history that have been inducted into the Apprentice Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this season.

In the short history of the Apprentice School Athletics Hall of Fame, just five teams have been inducted out of the over 100 year history of Apprentice Athletics, two of which were the 2000-01 and 2001-02 women's basketball teams who each won national championships.

Led by ASchool Hall of Famer Karen Barefoot, the 2000-2001 Lady Builders captured the program's first USCAA National Championship by defeating Huntington College in the national title game in Auburn, Maine. The team combined to set 44 Apprentice School records as well as two Virginia Division III records that year. Leading the team all season long was the three-headed monster of April Steele, Tanja Williams and Melissa Morton. This three-guard trio was a force to be reckoned with all year. Steele led the team with 19.6 points per game, 6.3 rebounds and six assists per contest. Morton averaged 15 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game.

The 2001-02 Lady Builders basketball team started off the season going 4-4 over the first eight games before going on a massive winning streak. Taking down 15 opponents in a row to get into postseason play, the Apprentice School won all three games in Auburn, Maine, at the USCAA National Championship, defeating Mount Aloysius 61-55 to win the program's second straight national championship. April Steele and Anita Allen were each named first team All-Americans, while head coach Judi Overbey was named the USCAA Coach of the Year.

Members from those two teams were introduced to the crowd and they were presented with individual awards.
