Wrestling Sits In Second After Day 1 At The NCWA National Championships
After the first two sessions of action, the Builders are currently sitting in 2nd place at the 2018 NCWA National Championships.  Apprentice currently has 66.5 points behind Liberty University with 74 and lead Central Florida with 60.  Fourteen Builders are still alive and seven individuals have advanced to the championship quarter-finals.

At 125 lbs, 2nd seeded Colton Messick advanced to the quarters with a clutch 6-4 win over Jesse Torres of Grays Harbor.  After giving up the first takedown of the bout, a furious pace allowed Messick to find two takedowns of his own to secure the win.  In his first bout he recorded a first period pin.  Colton will now face Alberto Perez of Emmanuel College, whom he defeated 9-5 in their last meeting, to secure a spot in the championship semi-final and his first All-American honors.

At 133 lbs, both Builders are still alive with Kolin Johnson moving on to the quarters and Anthony Monahan in the wrestle-backs.  After a pin in his first bout, Kolin avenged a pin from the National Duals with a pin of his own over 3rd seeded Brendan Hazelton of Grand Valley.  Kolin will now face De-Ante Evans of Toledo in the quarters to secure his first All-American honors.

Monahan stumbled after a pin and a major decision in his first two bouts before falling to defending champion Justus Griffith of Central Florida.  He will have to fight back in the consolations to earn his 2nd All-American finish.  The 12th seed will face unseeded Marco Colpo of Arizona first round Friday.

Both Builders are also alive at 141 pounds as well.  Sophomore Shalek Colon also got revenge over the Grand Valley opponent who defeated him at the National Duals, with a 10-7 decision over 7th seed Nick Reddy.  Shalek will now face 2nd seed Reid Stewart of Liberty with the potential to greatly impact the team standings.  Freshman Tyler Allen advanced to Friday at his first National Tournament with a pin before falling in the round of 32.  In the wrestle-back, Tyler recorded a 11-4 decision.  He will now face Carlos Garcia of Middle Tennessee, whom he defeated at conference two weeks ago.

At 149 lbs, 2X All-American Ty Boyd advanced to the quarters after a first round major-decision, and a pin in the round of 16.  After trailing 2-0 to Karson Ayers of Queens Charlotte, Ty recorded a defensive pin in a 'funk' situation.  Ty will now face #1 seed Jay Sheppard of Emmanuel and look to secure his 3rd All-American honors.

1st seeded Chad Simmons continued his dominance with a tech-fall and a 7-2 decision over Alfred State.  Chad will now face 2016 All-American Matthew Seymour of Central Florida in the quarter-final.

Dan Henson and Jeremy Mosely are both still alive at 174 lbs.  Henson has found the fuel to re-kindle his fire at this championship, as the 21st seed recorded two major upsets in his 3rd National Tournament.  In his first bout, Hendo found a pin after dominating 12th seed Gerald Kenkel of Wayne State 12-2.  In the 2nd round, he won by injury default over 5th seeded Brandon Buckingham of UMBC after leading 12-2.  Hendo will look to ride his momentum to the semi-finals with a win over 4th seed John Prentice of Dubois, who defeated him at the USCAA Invitational.

23rd seed Mosely got an upset of his own in the first round with a 9-2 decision over 10th seed Joe Fricilone of Grays Harbor.  After a loss to the 7th seed from Central Florida in the round of 16, Mosely will now face unseeded Austin Lasee of Winona Friday.

One builder is still alive at 184 lbs as Wes Sorey recorded a pin in his first bout before falling to Grand Valley in the round of 16, 11-8.  Wes will now face unseeded Nate Stemple of Temple.

2nd seed Ross Graham kept his win streak going at 197 lbs with a pair of technical falls in his first two bouts.  He will now face the 7th seed from Grays Harbor in the quarter final.  Ross is currently riding a 16 match win-streak.

After falling in his opening bout, Zach Sintobin bounced back with a pair of pins in the consolation bracket at 235 lbs.  He will now face 9th seed Gunnar Lynch of Penn State Fayette first round Friday.

At 285 lbs, senior Shakeem Lassiter dropped into the consolation bracket after a last-second takedown to his opponent from UMBC.  Shak will now need to win 4 bouts straight to secure All-American honors his final season.  First up will be unseeded Dylan Purcell of Emmanuel.
