Builder Wrestling Finishes Third at NCWA Nationals

Builder Wrestling Finishes Third at NCWA Nationals

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Apprentice School wrestling team finished in third place at the NCWA Nationals Saturday.

Having already secured a top eight finish, Caleb Olgers, Jordan Robins and DJ Uribes wrestled in the consolation quarters for the opportunity to guarantee a top six placement. Olgers and Robins both advanced with wins over Treasure Valley and Grays Harbor, respectively.

An additional four Builders joined them in the consolation semifinals for the opportunity to wrestle for bronze.

Olgers fell to the No. 4 seed from Springfield Tech despite mounting a late comeback, dropping to the fifth place bout.

Robins continued to climb the ladder with a 5-2 decision over Texas A&M for a shot at bronze against top seeded Parker Watson of Ohio State.

After falling in the semifinals, sophomore Zach Ortega fell to the Allen University opponent he has defeated multiple times this season, dropping him to the fifth place match.

Both Builders at 165 would also fall in the consolation semis as Landon Kissell and Ethan Baker set up a fifth place teammate versus teammate match up.

Peter Cortapasso was the final Builder to wrestle in session five, winning a technical bout over eighth seeded Caleb Corrigan of Rowan to wrestle for bronze.

In the final session, all but one Builder would lose their final bouts of the day. Despite the setback, the team would hang on to claim third place in the team race.

Both finalists Bruno Alves and Dillon Messick would drop heartbreaking losses to come home with the silver medal.

In the 125 finals, Alves was leading top seeded Jack Parker of Bellarmine in a smart and conservative match before Parker found a deep bottom late cradle to secure a second period pin. Alves is now a two time All-American, reaching the national finals on both occasions.

At 133, Messick appeared to be on his way to gold with a late reversal in the third period that was waived off after video review. In sudden victory, Kaden Blair found a takedown as Messick was looking to drive him out to claim a stalling point for the win. Messick is now a two time All-American, placing fifth in 2022 and is now the national runner-up.

Kissell found the only win in the medal round, reversing a deep cradle from teammate Baker for a pin of his own.

Despite the difficult final session, 2023 was a record setting season for the Builders. This was the first time in program history with nine All-Americans for the men's team.
